National Health Insurance
A foreign student who has the status of International Student must join the National Health Insurance program. If you join this insurance program, you will pay 30% of costs for medical treatment.
¡Enrollment procedures
You enroll in National Health Insurance at the city office where you registered as an alien. The required item is the Alien Registration Card. Your monthly insurance payment is calculated based on the number of family members and the insured individualfs income.You are required to enroll in National Health Insurance from the day you completed alien registration. You will be retroactively charged the insurance premiums for the period starting from the month you became insured.
¡Payment of premium
The insurance payment differs among cities, and you will be charged according to your income. If your income is lower than average, you may receive a remission of payment. For details, please ask at the city office.After you have enrolled, an insurance payment bill will be sent by post. When you receive a bill, you should pay the insurance premiums at a bank, post office, city office, or convenience store.
¡Insurance card
After you have enrolled, you will receive your health insurance card, which is issued per family or per individual.
As the card that proves your membership in the insurance program, it must be kept with care. When seeking medical treatment, show the insurance card at the reception desk.
¡Medical services not covered by National Health Insurance
Treatments which National Health Insurance cannot cover, Bed costs for single or twin room, medical materials
Medical examination, Vaccination
Normal pregnancy and childbirth
Abortions for economical reasons
Cosmetic surgery
Straightening of the teeth
¡Change of address
If you have changed your address, you should report it within 14 days to the city office where you moved. Insurance Card renewal is made at the city office.
¡Cancel
When you leave Japan and return permanently to your home-country, you should report in advance to the city office where you are registered. The National Health Insurance Card should be returned to the city office.
