Alien registration

Foreigners who intend to stay in Japan for more than 90 days must register as aliens at the city office where they live in accordance with the Alien Registration Law.

The Alien Registration Card is your personal identification while in Japan.
Foreigners must carry it at all times!

■ New registration

After entering Japan, you should register as an alien at the city office where you live within 90 days.

***Required documents***
Passport, 2 photos(4.5cm*3.5cm)

The Alien Registration Card is not issued on the day of application. You will be asked to return to the city office within a fixed period (about 2 weeks) to receive your Alien Registration Card.

■Certificate of registered items in the Foreign Resident Registry
(Toroku genpyo kisai jiko shomeisho)

A fee is charged forissuing the document.
This is a document which proves you are registered as an alien. You can request this certificate at the city office where you registered as an alien.

■Reporting changes

When a change has taken place in any of these registered items ((1)the place of residence, (2)name, (3)nationality, (4)occupation, (5)period of stay, (6)status of residence, (7)name or address of university), you need to report the changes at the city office within 14 days of the date when the change occurred. When moving, you need to register at the city office where you have moved.

■Registration renewal

Your alien registration card is valid until your fifth birthday after registration. The “renewal period” is indicated on your alien registration card. You should renew your registration within 30 days of your fifth birthday from the last renewal.

■Reissue of alien registration card

If your Alien Registration Card has been lost, stolen or becomes badly soiled and torn,please apply for reissue at the city office where you reside within 14 days of the loss.

■Returning alien registration card

If you are leaving Japan without a Re-entry Permit, your Alien Registration Card should be returned to the immigration officer at the airport or port of departure. If you are leaving Japan with a Re-entry Permit, you may hold onto your Alien Registration Card.
