Renewing the period of stay
The period of stay is defined according to the status of residence. Foreign students are allowed to stay for 2 years or 1 year. When you intend to stay for longer than the period of the permit, you must apply at the immigration office for your district before the expiration date of your present period of permit. You can apply during the 2 months prior to the expiry of your period of stay.
***Required documents***
(1) Applications for extension of period of stay
(2) Certification of enrollment issued by the university, Official transcript
(3) Transcriptiundergraduate student/graduate studentj
(4) Passport
(5) Alien Registration Card
(6) Fee (revenue stamp): 4,000 yen
The documents required will vary depending on your status of residence and conditions of stay. For details enquire at the immigration bureau for your district.
After your application has been handed in, notification of your acceptance or rejection will be sent to you anywhere (from 2 weeks to 3 months later). When you are permitted an extension of your period of stay, you should report it to the city office within 14 days.
Changing the status of residence
When you lose the status of college student, you must leave Japan within the present period of permit. However, if you have a job after graduation, you must apply to change your status of residence.
Those who were students at a Japanese language school with gShugaku statush or those who enter with gdependent statush should apply to change to gRyugaku statush to enroll at a university.

(4) Fee (revenue stamp): 4,000 yen

Re-entry permit
When you leave Japan temporarily such as vacation, you should apply at the immigration office for a re-entry permit before departure. You can not re-enter Japan without a re-enter permit.

(2) Passport
(3) Alien Registration Card
(4) Fee (revenue stamp): 3,000 yen (single permit), 6,000 yen (multiple permits)
Activities outside the permit status
Foreign students with gRyugaku statush are not permitted to work. When you wish to have a part time job, you must apply for a permit at the immigration office. If you work without this permit, you will be subject to punishment.

When you lose your passport
If you lose your passport, you must go to the police station. After that, you will have to carry out the procedures for having your passport reissued at the embassy. You may be able to complete those procedures at a consulate in the Kansai district. Please locate the consulate of your country.
