Christmas in Hawaii

How do you celebrate Christmas in Hawaii?

The origin of Christmas is a religious holiday, but it is now universally celebrated as a time of "giving and exchanging gifts"! In Hawaii, many people are of the Christian faith and during Christmas, many will attend church service and sing Christmas carols. Some choirs will visit retirement homes and sing carols to the residents. For Catholics, they will attend Christmas Mass either on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.

We have Santa's at Shopping Malls where parents can bring their children to sit on Santa's lap and whisper in Santa's ear what gift they wish for at Christmas time. On Christmas Day families with children will get up and open presents under the tree. Supposedly Santa delivered them on Christmas Eve and left them under the Christmas tree!

Many families will decorate the exterior of their homes with Christmas lights and people will drive through those neighborhoods to admire. Families and friends generally get together for a Christmas Eve dinner and brunch on Christmas Day. The rest of the day is spent watching American football on TV!

As a homestay coordinator for 15 years

Would you please tell us your most outstanding memory of your work as a homestay coordinator?

I have been a homestay coordinator for 15 years and I have so many fond memories. The best stories are happy ones that I hear from my host families and from my students. When both sides are happy with my placements, then I feel truly satisfied with my job!

I like everything about my job.

What do you like and dislike about your job?

I like everything about my job because I work from home and my schedule is very flexible. I was a foreign student and left home (Hong Kong) at 16 and went to high school in California. I experienced many cultural challenges and language barriers and I can still apply these feelings towards my work. I always say this: "There is no Right or Wrong with homestay, only a Good Match or a Bad one". I know my host families very well, so if the students tell me about themselves in their self-introduction letters, then I can try my best to make a suitable match.

- Come with an open mind to experience anything new!

Do you have any messages for our students who are interested in visiting you in Hawaii?

Please come with an open mind to experience anything new that you otherwise would not experience in Japan. Do not be shy or afraid. The more you allow yourself to try (of course nothing illicit or dangerous!), the more memories you will have. Try different foods, show your curiosity about places and sights. Do not focus only on name brand shopping because you can shop for these anywhere! Make sure you experience the unique sights on Oahu: Pearl Harbor, Bishop Museum, Diamond Head hike, North shore, Maunaloa Gardens to view the Hitachi Tree, Polynesian Culture Center, etc.
