If an earthquake occurs
Japan is a country that experiences many earthquakes, so always be mentally and physically prepared.
In addition, there are evacuation shelters designated by local governments, such as schools and community centers. Be sure to find out where the evacuation shelters are in your city, ward, or town.
- First ensure your own safety and evacuate to the nearest safe place.
・Turn off any gas or gas stove flames that are in use. Turn off all other cooking appliances, heating appliances, and other items that may cause a fire. If a fire has started, immediately put it out with a nearby fire extinguisher.
- Open the doors to rooms and the front door to secure an escape route.
- Try to stay up to date on earthquake information via television, radio, mobile phone, etc.
- Do not rush out of the building in a panic. Instead, calm down for a moment, take out your first aid bag, and go out to an open area while protecting your head with a helmet or something similar.
- Move to a shelter quickly while checking on each other so as not to get separated from your family and neighbors.
・If you are driving a car, avoid sudden braking, slow down slowly and move to the left shoulder of the road. Do not stop near gas stations or high-pressure gas facilities, under pedestrian bridges, etc.
・When walking, if the road is wide, move to the center, and in busy areas be careful of falling objects such as signs, utility poles, and window glass.
[After the earthquake]
There is a risk of aftershocks and tsunamis, so please gather as much accurate information as possible from television, radio, the Internet, etc. If you are unable to return home due to a large earthquake, immediately contact your country's embassy in Japan, the Student Affairs Division, or the International Exchange and Student Affairs Division to inform them of your safety and evacuation destination.
[Disaster Message Dial 171]
When a disaster occurs, it becomes difficult to make phone calls to affected areas. This dial is a voice message board where people in other areas can listen to safety information recorded by people in the affected area. You can also send messages to people in the affected area. When NTT starts the Disaster Message Dial Service, it will be announced on TV and radio. To use it, dial "171" and follow the user guidance in Japanese to record and play back messages.
When a typhoon comes
Do not go outside in strong winds. If you must go outside, wear a helmet or thick hat.
Stay away from broken utility poles and downed electric wires.
Pay close attention to weather information and evacuate immediately if evacuation advisories or instructions are issued.
When you are in a traffic accident
When you become a victim
Report the accident to the police immediately. If you do not report the accident, you may not be able to receive a traffic accident certificate, which is necessary for insurance claims.
Verify the address, name, vehicle registration number, insurance take-out date, and insurance company of the driver and the car owner (if the driver is not the car owner).
[When you become a perpetrator]
Provide first aid to victims (first aid, arranging for an ambulance).
I will notify the police station.
Gas leak
If you notice any abnormalities with your gas supply, immediately close the gas valve and meter cock.
Open the windows, do not light any fires inside the house, and do not touch electrical switches or sockets.
Please contact your gas company regardless of whether it is a holiday or nighttime.
Propane gas is heavier than air, so it is swept away with a broom, but it is also fanned out with something like a paper fan.
For propane gas, the contact information is written on the gas cylinder.
