Foreign Resident Registration
Those who are listed on the resident record are special permanent residents, as well as mid-to-long-term residents whose period of stay exceeds three months and who are issued a residence card.
Various resident registration procedures are required for entry, birth, moving, etc., but in principle, the procedures are the same as for Japanese residents.
For the necessary procedures and documents, please visit the website of your local city, ward, or town hall, or inquire at the resident registration department.
*Previously, the Alien Registration Act required foreigners residing in Japan for 90 days or more to register at the local government office (city hall, ward office, etc.) where they resided, but this requirement was abolished by a revision of the law in 2012.
